What a race for the final playoff spot in the Harold Brittain Conference which now sees the Mission City Outlaws back in 4th place with 1 game remaining in the regular season.
This week the Outlaws were on the road for 2 games and it all got started in Richmond against the Sockeyes on Thursday night. The Outlaws would have one of the best full periods of hockey in the opening frame going into the first intermission leading by a score of 3-1. The Sockeye’s would pick themselves up and dust themselves off with a huge 2nd period which saw Richmond get the lead for the first time in the game and lead 5-4 heading into the final frame. In a bold move, the Outlaws coaching staff made a goaltending change substituting Jeff Veitch for Bryce Phenix and the Richmond Sockeyes wasted little time testing Phenix as they were able to add to their goal scoring total and make it a 6-4 score early on. Late stages of the 3rd and the Outlaws would dictate majority of the play and with the goalie pulled for the extra attacker, Mission City would get within one goal. A late push from the Outlaws was not enough as the Sockeyes hold on and win by a final score of 6-5.
Moving on to Friday and the Mission City Outlaws were at the Cam Neely Arena to take on the Ridge Meadows Flames for the final time this regular season. The Outlaws were in dire need of a win and did they ever do that in a big way. One of the most entertaining game of the season between 2 clubs who brought it shift after shift. It was the Outlaws that would finally get rewarded for their hard work the last month, on the power play as the team went 3 for 7 and that would be enough to put the Flames away by a final score of 3-2 and leap frog the Port Moody Panthers into the final playoff spot.
With the win, the Outlaws take fate back in their own hands as all it takes now is to get a win against the North Vancouver Wolfpack on Thursday night at the Mission Leisure Centre. Needless to say a lot of eyes will be on this game and you would be crazy not to be in the rink to cheer on your Mission City Outlaws.
As for now you’re up to date. See you at the rink.
